The Self-expression and Leadership Program is the final course in Landmark Education’s Curriculum for Living. People who have done this course have created a project designed to make a difference in some community in their lives. From bad roads, to refurbishing an untended public garden to organ donation to recycling water graduates have designed and executed projects for their extended communities, or even some group that they had no prior relationship with before doing the course.

Many people decided to have their project be about some community that has a pressing need, such as people requiring blood, training on first response to an emergency, cataract operations for the poor, etc. The most important requirement in choosing a project is that the area chosen has to be something that is important or inspiring to the person creating the project—it had to be something that they are passionate about and that called them into powerful action.

Each person is given training, support and coaching to empower them to bring that project to fruition over the three months of this Landmark Education Program. As they do so, they make enormous strides in their ability to engage others in fulfilling a shared vision, to create and manage teams, and to deliver extraordinary results. These skills are then available for them to apply in all areas of their life.

In addition to developing their own leadership skills, participants are trained to call forth the leadership of other people around them in their communities. The people in the program discover that they can be and in fact are inspiring leaders and the people around them come to know themselves that way as well.

Some participants complete their projects successfully and some do not. The point of the program is not so much to have a successful project happen in three months, but rather to have each participant be committed, unstoppable and self-expressed and making a huge difference in their communities and families for the rest of their lives.

Free medicines to the poor - Punjagutta Saibaba temple trust is distributing free medicines to the poor so that they do not ignore their health due to lack of money. The Trust conducts free health camps for the poor in temple premises by accepting medicines and funds from the donors with the help of doctors who offer voluntary service. The Trust also accepts medicines from the donors and distributes them to the poor free of cost. Currently 60 people have been enrolled into offering funds to Saibaba Trust for offering free medicine to the poor.

Objective : To collect medicines worth 1 lakh rupees every year for this trust and to approach drug manufacturing companies and request them to supply some medicines to the trust free of cost/subsidized price.

R-Cube - An effort to imbibe the three Rs in our life – recycle, reduce and reuse by recycling greywater in our households. Waste water from homes is categorized as either black water – from sanitation as it is full of pathogens or as grey water – from all the other uses since it is only mildly contaminated through soap, lint and hair. It is very easy to filter grey water and reuse it.

Benefit : By filtering and reusing greywater in our homes we can save upto 35% of all fresh water used in a household. The cost savings to the house hold or the apartment block in a year is enormous! Nationally, the saved water can be diverted for more important uses such as agriculture. There is reduced pressure on the city’s water works department as they need to supply less drinking water i.e. Lesser amount of purification, lesser amount of pumping, lesser storage and distribution etc. There is reduced pressure on the sewerage department as well as the sanitation water treatment plants as the total volume of black water to be handled is reduced by 35% due to non addition of grey water into the black water stream. There is reduced pressure on the country’s water infrastructure – positively impacting the overall carbon footprint and reducing green house emissions – helping foster a greener planet.

Objective : This project questions the unnecessary use of fresh drinking water for purposes of sanitation and gardening and would like to encourage filtering grey water and reusing it for these needs.

Improving the road at Bapuji Nagar - for the benefit of shop owners on the road and inhabitants of Bapuji Nagar. The well laid tar road of Bapuji Nagar, Old Bowenpally was dug for the purpose laying underground pipes and the same was not restored after the pipe laying work. People are suffering due to water logging in the rainy season, traffic jams and it is affecting the business of the shop owners.

HEALTH BLOOM - Health Care for the ONES who care for our surroundings - “HEALTH BLOOM” proposes to provide blooming health, by assuring HEALTH for all, especially for the ones who care for our surroundings – Sweepers, Sewerage Cleaners, and Dump yard Cleaners. Due to long duration exposure to the environment they work in, they suffer from chronic health problems of lungs, bones and skin. The cleaners do not have proper access to specialized health care due to financial constraints or due to ignorance of the health hazards that arise from the work they do. If no initiative is taken to enroll them into having a proper health care, their health will have adverse effects in the future and will not be able to support themselves and their families, which in turn will affect the society.

The first medical camp was conducted on August 10th, for 44 workers and a critical case has been diagnosed and is being taken care of. Contribution/ Funds are required to facilitate the costly lab facilities and medication.

Building budding entrepreneurs - The aim of this project is to promote new generation entrepreneurs by creating a platform to identify demand by interacting with the established industry that are willing to encourage the intending youth to setup facility to manufacture materials required by them or the industry in general or provide required services. These budding entrepreneurs will be able to provide employment and in the long run should be able to promote intending youth on their own or through the Trust thus becoming catalysts to economic growth. The project in the long term also involves setting up a trust with a corpus to facilitate seed capital to the intending youth who are unable to find money to invest. Several industrialists have shown willingness to associate in this community project. This involvement gives them satisfaction of ‘giving back to the society’.

This is more like governance in place that will ensure administration to be accountable for their duties.

Living healthy and wealthy - Eradication of lifestyle diseases: Most diseases are today are life style based such as cancer, hypertension, stress, diabetes, cardiovascular disease (heart attack), obesity respiratory disorders, or even skin related disease. Not just that, HIV is also a life style disease.

The project envisages spreading awareness about the ways to eradicate these diseases from the society and there by building a healthy and strong nation and a very happy world. This is being done in coordination with a group of health and wellness consultants by creating awareness among various groups of people in corporate offices, housing societies and apartment complexes.

So far, over 500 people have benefited from these awareness programs and a good number have been showing improved results in their health and fitness, following the regime and habits advised by the health consultants.

The project seeks to enroll people with a golden heart to spend quality time with these children and spread love and affection in their deprived lives.

Healthy Living by Low Income Families - Having good health fundamental to the wellbeing of human beings. In today’s world many low income families are deprived of good health because of unhygienic living habits and access to good medical support. Creating awareness about the benefits of healthy living and providing medical support to low income families would definitely help improve the wellbeing of the present generation of low income families and improve the standard of life for their future generations.

The project “Healthy Living by Low Income Families” has been initiated to improve the health standard of low income families by enrolling them toward healthy living conditions and also a doctor would support the family by giving free medical advice. Each doctor enrolled into the project would provide free medical guidance and advice to a low income family.

Speak your mind - The project is for an orphanage - Balika Nilayam - Masab Tank, who carry out an early intervention class for children upto 4 years for children who have an impaired hearing ability. The project revolves around assisting these kids to have an access to understand colors , play around with them and be expressive. This will be enabled by carrying out art classes for them, which will also facilitate their current training.

Promoting healthy habits for a healthy society - The fast paced life coupled with improper food habits, lack of exercise, smoking, gutkha and alcohol addictions takes a heavy toll on our already over burdened body and leads to lack of vitality, obesity and other problems. Empowering juvenile delinquents - The project is aimed at empowering 150 children of the Juvenile homes located in Hyderabad by the end of August 30, 2010. The empowerment includes training and counseling the children to continue the education which they left and/ or to learn a vocation such as Computer operator, Sewing, Candle making etc. This is aimed at to see the children continue their education and/or take up a vocation which enable them to live independently with dignity and honor.

At present the children in homes are in need of education and training. The facilities and efforts provided by the Government Homes are inadequate to empower them due to the obvious reasons of inadequacy.

Further, the active co-operation and participation of the community members can make these efforts fruitful. If no intervention is given they tend to become/ being used by the anti-social elements on their release can pose threat to the society. In the interest of the society as well as a part of the social responsibility the project is taken up to empower and rehabilitate these children.

Funds for the deaf and dumb - The project aims at collecting funds for the deaf and dumb school at Tilaknagar, Hyderabad. The school provides vocational education to about 45 students and is in dire need of funds to meet their monthly expenses such as teachers’ salaries, rent etc.
